I cannot wait for 8 weeks for a dashboard, said the CEO of the SaaS firm
This is how the call ended, when the CEO said in October last year was looking to hire Optiblack for setting up Mixpanel for them
Optiblack has done this 100+ times to know how much time it takes to implement Mixpanel or any analytical tool to get the first set of dashboards ready
We could totally empathise with the CEO and this was not the first time when we have heard this.
But after doing 100+ implementations we knew what takes so much time
It was always one thing: Engineering
The tech development piece was the one that always took more time
There are usually 5 steps to implement any analytical tool
- Setup
- Design tracking plan
- Development: SDK implementation
- Go Live
- Hypercare and preparing dashboards
The step #3 would always take the maximum amount of time, the highest we have seen is 6 months
The reason why it is complex is and causes delay
- Developers have to go through a new SDK
- We have different SDK for different technology, so a different SDK for mobile, web platforms, server and backends
- There are nuances of using a new SDK which needs to be done in a certain manner
- It is similar to learning a new language
- Many times the backend is not ready to do the setup as it requires API Changes
- Competing priorities with current development
- Finding time in sprints
- One event can be 100s of places in the app
With all the experience, we internally had a discussion on what we can do to solve this
We took a bold target of how we can do the work of 8+ weeks in 1 week?
This is why our internal tool Hodor was born
Out of solving this exact need
It automates the step 3
Once the tracking is ready this automates the code that is required to be implemented based on the SDK and the platform and converts the entire development into step-by-step process of just copy-paste the code
Which is 10x faster than doing it manually and solving for the nuances of SDK
Here is a demo of implementing 1 event in 4 minutes, we literally kept the video at 1x
We have made this application live on for Mixpanel implementation today, we are going to make it live for segment, rudderstack, moengage
If you are someone who is planning to implement Mixpanel analytics for your app or website, you can use this
